Sildenafil Citrate is a widely recognized and prescribed medication for erectile dysfunction. It belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. By improving the erectile response to sexual stimulation, Sildenafil helps men achieve and sustain an erection, thereby enhancing sexual function and confidence. It does not cause an erection without sexual stimulation.
Sexual stimulation leads to the local release of nitric oxide (NO) in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. Nitric oxide then activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase, resulting in increased levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP causes smooth muscle relaxation in the corpus cavernosum, allowing for increased blood flow and an erection. Sildenafil enhances the effect of NO by inhibiting phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), the enzyme responsible for the degradation of cGMP. This results in higher levels of cGMP and thus a more robust and prolonged erectile response.
Sildenafil is taken orally, usually as needed, approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour before anticipated sexual activity, although it can be taken up to 4 hours before. The effectiveness may be delayed if taken with a high-fat meal. Dosage will be determined by your Genesis Health Solutions provider. Common side effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, dizziness, visual disturbances (such as blurred vision or a blue tinge to vision), and dyspepsia. Sildenafil is contraindicated in patients taking nitrates for chest pain (e.g., nitroglycerin) due to the risk of a dangerous drop in blood pressure. It should also be used with caution in individuals with certain cardiovascular conditions, severe liver or kidney impairment, or a history of priapism. A full medical history should be discussed with your provider before starting Sildenafil.
